Before the advent of formal religion people he world over believed in spirits. They assumed and assigned spirits to many natural things like hills, mountains, forests, rivers. They also named spirits for natural phenomena such as rain, storm, wind. Even after the establishment of religions, many of those spirits were incorporated into new religions and rites. Myanmar are no exception. We also have integrated some spirits into our social life.
